Temporary closure of Mitchell Library Reading Room

Our plans to restore the Mitchell Library Reading Room to its original 1940s glory are well underway.
The Mitchell reading room

From 8 January works will begin to remove the stairs that were installed in the floor of the reading room in the 1980s. Once this has been completed, the entire footprint will be recarpeted. This work will provide much-needed additional seating — 60 extra seats in fact — for readers.

The Reading Room will be temporarily closed from 5 pm (Special Collections at 4 pm) Friday 7 January to early February while this work is being carried out. During this time, services will be available from the Governor Marie Bashir Reading Room.

The same conditions will apply in the temporary Special Collections area:

  • no bags, however lockers are available to hire
  • no food or drinks, including bottled water
  • only pencils can be used, no pens
  • closed on Sundays

We will be operating with a reduced number of staff and collection retrieval may take longer than usual. We appreciate your support and patience while we look after individual requests.
