Why a Children’s Library?

On any given day, thousands of people walk through the doors of the State Library of NSW: researchers from across the world, students in search of a higher grade, school groups participating in a curriculum-based learning programs, families and children looking for entertainment, tourists wanting to explore this beautiful place. The Library provides a place for them to study, research, and explore.

Despite all this, the Library does not currently have an informal area where children and their families can browse our collections and nurture their love of reading.

The new Children’s Library will fill this need, giving young visitors a special area of their own at the State Library and showcase the best of Australian children’s literature.

The Wonder of Reading

The new Children’s Library will be an engaging, browsable area for children and families to explore the breadth and diversity of our unique children’s literature collection. Located in the Macquarie Street building, the Children’s Library will offer direct access to the best works for children and young adults written and published in Australia, with a representative sample of classic works from beyond our shores.

Families, children, scholars and writers of children’s literature alike will have the opportunity to nurture their curiosity, develop new ideas, and discover the wonder of reading.

Support the Children’s Library

Please help us bring the Children’s Library to life. All donations will go towards the creation of this new library, the acquisition of key works, and children’s learning programs.

Explore our Children’s Literature Collection

The Library’s collection of children’s literature is one of the most significant in Australia. In our stacks we hold manuscripts and illustrations from authors like May Gibbs, Pixie O’Harris, Norman Lindsay, Ethel Turner, Ruth Park, C.J. Dennis, Alison Lester, Bronwyn Bancroft to name a few.

The new Children’s Library will allow browsable access to modern editions of the works of all these people, and others. It will also provide a glimpse of the riches of our own collection, and the contribution of Australian writers and illustrators to this important literary genre.
